Too much concrete at school created a colourless environment. Pupils, teachers and experts started thinking about this problem and came up with some ideas.
Green, green, green
Our dream is to make SJABI’s schoolyard more resilient to climate change and make it a pleasant, stimulating and healthy learning environment. Therefore, we create a green oasis by removing pavements and adding greenery.
Our eco-working group, with climate-conscious pupils, teachers and experts, came up with a master plan. The Province of Antwerp supported the project with a nice grant.
Action, action, action
With removing pavements, new borders, butterfly-friendly plants, trees and insect hotels, we strive for more greenery and a healthy school environment. Pupils rolled up their sleeves themselves to remove the first concrete tiles. Together with other Flemish villages, we will take up the challenge to mitigate as much as possible. Hopefully we will win the ‘Flemish removing pavement championship’.
The design will be both pleasant and functional. The master plan provides space and sustainable furniture for outdoor classes. This way, we focus on the mental well-being of our pupils. This gives us a unique opportunity to create attractive outdoor spaces to relax during the break. We look forward to the green oasis in the new school year.
