In an era of increasing division, it is crucial to reflect on how we address polarization, particularly within education. This issue impacts everyone and demands reflection, dialogue, and action. To support teachers in managing polarization in their classrooms, we have compiled some valuable materials. This blog post offers a brief overview and insight into the topic. If you wish to learn more directly from experts, we are organizing a conference dedicated to this subject. More information is provided below.

For an introduction to the topic of polarization, we recommend the work of Professor Quita Muis, an associate professor at Tilburg University. Her research delves into the complex world of polarization. While concerns about polarization are widespread, to what extent are these concerns justified? By focusing on social identification and the critical role of education in our society, Quita Muis explores the ‘what,’ ‘who,’ ‘why,’ and ‘how’ of polarization in Europe.

If you are experiencing polarization in your classroom, it is essential to choose the right teaching methods. We recommend trying the scientifically supported methods from the ‘Teaching Controversial Issues’ project. This Erasmus+ project involved an international team investigating effective strategies for handling sensitive and polarized issues in the classroom. The materials available on this website can be directly applied to your teaching practice.

To learn more about polarization directly from experts, mark your calendar for April 24, 2025. KU Leuven, in collaboration with the ENIGMA network—a network for social science and behavioral science teachers—will host a conference. This event aims to create an open, inclusive, and democratic learning environment for students. The conference will feature opportunities to engage with experts like Quita Muis, guest speakers, researchers from the TCI project, and students developing innovative materials related to polarization. Alongside academic insights, we will provide practical tools to address polarization in your educational practice. Attendees will leave with new perspectives and practical ideas to implement in their classrooms.
